2015 Tour de France results and standings, Stage 15: Andre Greipel gets 3rd stage win

Peter Sagan bears the green jersey, but there’s no question that Andre Greipel has been the best pure sprinter of the 2015 Tour de France.

Andre Greipel nipped John Degenkolb, Alexander Kristoff and Peter Sagan at the line to win the last pure sprint before the Champs-Élysées. Strong breakaways never materialized as expected on an all-downhill Stage 15 at the Tour de France. Any threats were swallowed by 20 kilometers to go, leaving sprint teams to jockey for position the rest of the stage.

There’ll be no change on the general classification. All of the yellow jersey contenders finished with the peloton on the day, saving their efforts for the forthcoming Alps.

Sunday was purely dedicated to the points competition, which despite Greipel’s win is still Sagan’s to lose. Sagan won the intermediate sprint (and was handed the Tour’s combativity award) to strengthen his grip on the green jersey. A fourth-place finish won’t cut into his points total enough to make him shake. More likely, it hurt to fall short of a stage win again.

Greipel, meanwhile, now has three stage wins at the 2015 Tour. Sagan will ultimately take home the most coveted prize among sprinters, but there’s no question that Greipel has been remarkable the last two-plus weeks.
