Kam Chancellor will hold out of Seahawks training camp for new contract, per report

Kam Chancellor is the latest Seahawks asking for a better contract.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor will hold himself out of Seattle Seahawks training camp in hopes of getting a new contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday night. Chancellor did not report to camp Thursday, and is set to miss Friday's official start unless he gets what he feels is an appropriate deal in the mean time.

Chancellor is currently playing under a four-year extension he signed in 2013, before the Seahawks made their run to a Super Bowl title. He went on to earn Pro Bowl nods and second-team All-Pro honors in consecutive seasons. He is currently scheduled to make $4.55 million in base salary in 2015. At an average of $7 million per season, Chancellor's contract ranks eighth among NFL safeties, according to Spotrac.

The Seahawks are currently dealing with a number of contract issues. Quarterback Russell Wilson and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner aren't likely to holdout, but both are due potentially significant pay raises after stellar starts to their careers. Defensive end Michael Bennett wants a new contract as well, and even threatened a holdout of his own before ultimately reporting to camp.

Chancellor could incur fines for each practice he misses and isn’t due to become a free agent until 2018, so he may not have much leverage against the organization in negotiations. Regardless, the Seahawks’ front office no doubt wishes it could have just one less headache.
