I love dogs. From the Westminster Dog Show to a sled dog nursery in the wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the strays of Baghdad, I have befriended thousands of dogs, almost all of whom were more likable than the average human. I have lived with dogs in my home for most of my life -- large and small, mutt and purebred. Dogs are the best!

I met Bill in the park when I was 16 after I’d fought with my parents and stormed out of the house. At the time, he was mostly ribs and dirt, and he showed up at our front door about an hour after I had cooled off and returned home. He was boxy and reddish, sporting a Lab’s head atop a barrel chest atop too-short legs. A mottled purple tongue suggested a hint of Chow. He was fearful of grown men and aggressive toward them. He humped pillows and comforters. I loved him like a brother. But if I’m being honest -- and DOG JUDGMENT is nothing if not honest -- Bill was a mediocre dog.
