Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague resigns after drunk texts

The athletic director is involved in a pair of sexual harassment incidents.

The University of Minnesota announced Friday morning that athletic director Norwood Teague has resigned after an incident involving inappropriate texts sent by Teague.

(UPDATE: The texts Teague sent are out, and it’s clear why he had to step down.)

Teague, who has been in charge at Minnesota since 2012, gave a statement Friday morning, saying that he sent the messages two weeks ago while drinking and that he would seek help for his alcohol abuse:

It’s still unknown what Teague said or did in the texts, but university president Eric Kaler specified that there were two sexual harassment incidents involving university employees.

Teague came to Minnesota from VCU, where he was responsible for hiring Shaka Smart and the subsequent reinvigoration of the Rams’ basketball program. At Minnesota, his tenure will most be remembered for the controversial decision to fire coaching legend Tubby Smith, who he replaced with Richard Pitino.

No replacement has been named.
