Fifteen games will be in the books by the time the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers kick off Monday night (if there's some bleed-over from the Philadelphia-Atlanta game and I'm not quite accurate there, so sue me). There will be all sorts of storylines across the league by that point, and Minnesota-San Francisco will finish the first week off.
Fantasy football advice, Week 1: Who to start/sit for Vikings vs. 49ers Monday night
The first week of the NFL season concludes in San Francisco Monday night.
Both teams come into the game almost totally healthy, at least from a fantasy perspective. The biggest worries are tight ends MyCole Pruitt and Chase Ford, and (a) both are fully ready to go, (b) neither is a fantasy option anyway. The 49ers have no real injury concerns.
Monday night’s game in San Francisco is scheduled for 10:15 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
VIKINGS
Start 'em: Yes, if you have Adrian Peterson in fantasy, you're using him. All my concerns from the preseason still apply, though.
Start 'em?: It was a good-not-great rookie season for Teddy Bridgewater last year, and while it's easy to imagine a leap forward this year, he's only a mid-range QB2 for now. ... Charles Johnson is slated to be the team's top receiver this year, though there are enough weapons in Minnesota that he's only a mid-range flex play. ... Kyle Rudolph has shown no history of health, but as long as he's on the field, he's worthy of at least a look. ... Blair Walsh is a perfectly fine kicker, and if the offense makes a leap he's worth some use. ... The Vikings' defense is competent, though you'll probably be able to find a better option out there.
Sit 'em: Unless/until something happens with Peterson, Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata are not real fantasy options. ... I wouldn't use Mike Wallace. I think his fantasy-useful days are largely behind him.
49ERS
Start 'em: The fantasy world has been underrating Carlos Hyde all preseason; he's close to RB1 territory, and a definite starter.
Start 'em?: In PPR leagues, Anquan Boldin is a perfectly fine flex play. In standard, he's perhaps a little lower, but still useful. ... Phil Dawson had been a useful kicker for years before he suffered through the 49ers' falling apart last year. He'll need the team to put it back together to be helpful.
Sit 'em: The book isn't closed on Colin Kaepernick being a good fantasy option, but we haven't seen it in a while. Stay away for now. ... I'd avoid Reggie Bush unless something happens to Hyde. ... The biggest attribute Torrey Smith brings -- his ability to draw pass interference penalties -- doesn't help you in fantasy. He's not useful right now. ... Vernon Davis still has all the talent that made him so fantasy attractive in recent seasons, but he needs to reprove himself. ... Remember when the 49ers' defense was such a good fantasy play? Yeah, it's not that.
