Leonard Fournette scored all three of No. 14 LSU’s touchdowns, and it was just enough to lift the Tigers over No. 25 Mississippi State, 21-19 in Starkville.
LSU vs. Mississippi State final score, with 3 things to know from the Tigers’ win
The Bulldogs had a chance to win at the last second, but a 52-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
The Bulldogs trailed 21-6 seemingly forever, but Dak Prescott led a rally that once gave Mississippi State a chance to tie the game on a two-point conversion, and later on a 52-yard field goal attempt at the last second, but both tries failed. Prescott had Ashton Shumpert open running into the end zone, but the pass was a bit short, and Shumpert was unable to hang on. The field goal came on the heals of a terribly timed delay of game penalty and a couple of freeze attempts from Les Miles, but it was wide right and maybe even a bit short.
Most of the game was pretty quiet. There were 17 total punts. Other than Fournette’s fireworks and Mississippi State’s late rally, pretty mundane stuff and not worthy of Mississippi State setting that group cowbell record Friday night.
Three things to know
1. Leonard Fournette is a terror. We all basically knew that, but since LSU didn’t play last week, this is really the first time we saw the sophomore version of star running back. His three touchdowns were all impressive. The first was a leap over the top of the pile. The last two were on tough runs that featured broken tackles and big speed. He was nearly able to ice the game for LSU on their last drive, and finished with 159 yards on 28 carries.
2. No, LSU still hasn’t quite figured out what to do with their quarterback. Brandon Harris only threw 14 passes for the game. He was able to complete nine of them, but it was nothing special. He only gained 71 yards through the air for the Tigers. Probably his most impressive throw was a 50-yard touchdown pass in the first half, but it was called back for a penalty. Harris had a much better rushing average, gaining 48 yards on five carries.
3. Things aren’t quite the same for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs famously announced their arrival last year in Baton Rouge, coming out and knocking LSU in impressive fashion early last season en route to an eventual #1 ranking. Although star quarterback Prescott returned for his senior season, there has been plenty of concern about losing so many other players. It was rough going for the Bulldogs before the late rally, and the loss snapped an eight game home winning streak.
