St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder strain, the team announced on Saturday. The right-hander left his start against the Milwaukee Brewers after just seven pitches on Friday night.
Carlos Martinez out for remainder of Cardinals’ season with a strained shoulder
Martinez left his start after just seven pitches on Friday night.

“Carlos Martinez suffered a shoulder strain and will be shut down for the remainder of the season,” general manager John Mozielak told reporters on Saturday.
Martinez allowed a ground-rule double to Scooter Gennett to lead off the game, followed by a flyout to left field by Logan Schafer. Martinez then made one pitch to Adam Lind before stretching out his shoulder. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and a team trainer came to check on Martinez, who was immediately removed from the game.
Martinez was emotional as he walked off the mound, covering his face in his glove as he walked to the dugout.
Tyler Lyons relieved Martinez and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run.
The Cardinals’ pitching has been their strong suit in 2015, leading them to baseball’s best record at 97-57. Martinez was a big part of that, going 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA and a team-leading 184 strikeouts in 179 2/3 innings.
