The Minnesota Vikings bounced back from a disappointing season-opening loss in Week 2, handily beating the Detroit Lions. The San Diego Chargers also beat the Lions, but in Week 1, and they followed that up with their own loss. Both teams are 1-1 heading into their matchup Sunday.
Fantasy football advice, Week 3: Who to start/sit for Chargers vs. Vikings
Two 1-1 teams face off Sunday looking to climb above .500.
At least from a fantasy perspective, both teams come into Sunday largely healthy. The only notable injury on either side as far as fantasy is concerned is San Diego tight end Ladarius Green, who is questionable with a concussion. It’s Green’s second concussion in a short time, making him dicey for Sunday’s game.
The Vikings will host the game, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
CHARGERS
Start ‘em: If you’ll concede that Keenan Allen is better than his awful Week 2, I’ll concede that he might not be as strong as his awesome Week 1. Either way, he’s solidly in WR2 territory.
Start ‘em?: At this point in his career, Philip Rivers is who he is. Solid. Good. Helpful. Not great, never gonna be great. You might be able to do better, but then again you might not. ... It’s been pretty solidly a timeshare in the San Diego backfield, with 32 touches for Danny Woodhead compared to 34 for Melvin Gordon. Woodhead has found the end zone, though, with two scores compared to none for Gordon. Both are flex options, with Woodhead perhaps a slightly better play. ... Stevie Johnson has actually been more productive than Allen so far, though Allen has almost twice the targets. Johnson has made himself a flex play though. ... The offense has done enough to support Josh Lambo as a mid-range kicker.
Sit ‘em: It’s hard to imagine the Chargers will risk anything with Ladarius Green after his second concussion in short order. ... The Chargers’ defense has little upside. It might not rank in fantasy-start consideration all year long.
VIKINGS
Start ‘em: The Chargers have let Ameer Abdullah and Giovani Bernard tally up yards in the first two weeks. Adrian Peterson is slightly better than those guys.
Start ‘em?: After a miserable Week 1, Teddy Bridgewater showed some of his rookie-year promise in Week 2, putting up 18 fantasy points. He’s a strong QB2. ... Kyle Rudolph has the talent to produce as long as he’s healthy, but he’s not consistent enough. He’s a high-end TE2. ... With the home game, maybe you can use Blair Walsh, but there are probably safer kickers out there.
Sit ‘em: The Vikings have some decent wide receivers, though you wouldn’t know it from production so far -- Charles Johnson and Mike Wallace have combined for 12 fantasy points through two weeks. Until they produce more, you can’t use them. ... The Vikings’ defense was supposed to be improved, and it still might be, but the taste of that Carlos Hyde Week 1 performance is still on everybody’s tongue.
SUMMARY
Start in every league: Keenan Allen, Adrian Peterson
Start if you’re desperate: Philip Rivers, Danny Woodhead, Melvin Gordon, Stevie Johnson, Josh Lambo, Teddy Bridgewater, Kyle Rudolph, Blair Walsh
Bench: Ladarius Green, San Diego defense, Charles Johnson, Mike Wallace, Minnesota defense
