Free agent pitcher Ian Kennedy has found himself a new home with the defending world champion Kansas City Royals, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. The deal is worth $70 million over five years. The deal includes an opt-out clause after two seasons, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Kennedy, a right-hander who was previously with the San Diego Padres, is 31 years old. Last season he went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA and 174 strikeouts. The 15-loss season was the worst of his career. In each of the last six seasons, he has had 30 or more starts, topping out at 33 starts in both 2011 and 2012 for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

During his eight seasons in the majors, Kennedy had gone 75-68 with 1,140 strikeouts and a 3.98 ERA, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

Kennedy came into the majors with the New York Yankees in 2007 and spent three seasons there until 2010 when he was traded to the Diamondbacks. He went to the Padres as part of a 2013 trade.

In November, Kennedy rejected a qualifying offer from the Padres.
