The NFL had back-to-back tie games for the first time since 1997

I mean, sure why not.

If this NFL season hasn’t been weird enough already for you, it got stranger on Sunday when the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington tied, giving us back-to-back ties for the first time since 1997.

It’s only the second time it’s ever happened since the overtime era began in 1974. Last week, the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals tied at 6-6.

The last time it happened was in 1997, when the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens tied at 10 apiece in Week 12, and then the New York Giants and Washington tied at 7 apiece in Week 13.

The odds of this happening are extremely low. ESPN’s Darren Rovell points out that there’s just a 75,000-to-1 chance of it happening.

This seems kinda cool, but it’s also pretty indicative of how this season has gone in the NFL. The last four nationally televised games were the Seahawks-Cardinals tie, Brock Osweiler’s historically bad Monday night game against the Denver Broncos, that Thursday night dud between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans, and the Washington-Bengals tie.

Maybe that’s got something to do with the bad ratings!
