Quincy Enunwa is saving Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets all by himself

Quincy Enunwa broke up an interception, ran through four tackles for a touchdown, and set-up a go-ahead touchdown — all in the third quarter.

The New York Jets benched Ryan Fitzpatrick for Geno Smith two weeks ago, but were forced to go back to the veteran when Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury. Falling behind the Cleveland Browns looked like it could’ve been enough to convince the Jets that it was time to turn to the third option, Bryce Petty, but wide receiver Quincy Enunwa is saving the day for Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick entered halftime with just three completions for 30 yards on 14 pass attempts. He also took a shot from Browns defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun that may have made him reconsider running more.

While Fitzpatrick insisted he’s confident in his abilities, it didn’t look that way. But he started the second half by leading the Jets on a 78-yard touchdown drive that cut the Browns’ lead to 20-14.

It could’ve gone in the opposite direction, though. On the second play of the drive, Fitzpatrick threw a pass directly to Browns cornerback Jamar Taylor, who was trying to pull in an interception, but couldn’t because Enunwa reached over his head to knock it away.

Several plays later, Enunwa caught a crossing route across the middle of the field and broke four Browns tackles for a 24-yard touchdown. On the next drive, he caught a 57-yard pass down the middle of the field to set up another Jets touchdown that gave them a 21-20 lead.

If it wasn’t for Enunwa, the Jets would almost certainly still be losing and the team might’ve had to turn to Petty, although that’s something the team maybe should consider doing anyway.
