Starting at the back of the pack at Homestead-Miami Speedway after his car failed a pre-race inspection, Jimmie Johnson finished at the front 267 laps later to win the Ford EcoBoost 400 and a seventh Sprint Cup Championship title. Johnson joined Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt in the feat.

Johnson rallied after NASCAR officials made him start the race at the back of the pack.

Kyle Larson finished second after being passed on the final restart with two laps remaining, and Kevin Harvick finished third. However, neither was eligible for the series championship. Of the final four standing, Joey Logano finished fourth, Kyle Busch sixth, and Carl Edwards 34th following an outcome-changing wreck.
Johnson had qualified to start 14th on Sunday, but NASCAR officials decided his crew had made “unapproved adjustments” after pulling his car from the starting grid before the race. He quickly made his way toward the front after starting 40th, and took advantage of two late-race opportunities to put himself in position to win.
The outcome of the Sprint Cup Championship and race changed dramatically with 11 laps remaining after Edwards — then leading among the four contenders — tried to block Logano, resulting in a wreck that knocked Edwards out of the race and caused Martin Truex Jr.’s car to barrel down the track like a fireball. After the race was red-flagged for more than 30 minutes, Logano stayed in, taking new tires and fixing body damage during the ensuing yellow.
Larson and Harvick led a majority of the race, with Larson at the front for 132 laps and Harvick there for 79. Logano also led six laps and Edwards led 47.
