Gregg Popovich blasts Spurs for ‘pathetic performance’ in win against Mavericks

Pop held nothing back despite the Spurs’ victory over Dallas.

Gregg Popovich is normally tight-lipped. Reporters tend to have an unusually difficult time extracting usable information from the San Antonio Spurs’ 20-year head coach.

But this season has been different.

Pop has already chided United States voters for electing Donald Trump as the country’s president-elect. And on Monday night, following the Spurs’ 96-91 win over the Dallas Mavericks, he scolded his team for its lackluster effort against an opponent bearing the NBA’s worst record.

“That was a pathetic performance on the part of the Spurs. You know, they had some guys out, we had some guys out, but they had a lot more out than we did. I thought we showed a lack of humility, a lack of respect for the opponent, a very pathetic performance at both ends of the court, both in execution and in grunt, in fiber, in desire. It was an awful performance. Oh, and they deserved to win the basketball game. I forgot to say that.”

The Spurs take on the Charlotte Hornets next. And if Popovich’s message was received, Kemba Walker and company could face some issues when San Antonio comes to town.
