Russell Westbrook’s latest triple double is something only Magic Johnson & Isiah Thomas have done

Westbrook set a new franchise record with 22 assists.

Russell Westbrook just keeps climbing the ladder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder pounded the Phoenix Suns, 114-101, on Saturday, and Westbrook picked up his 13th triple-double of the season, torching the Suns for 26 points, 11 rebounds and 22 assists in 34 minutes on the floor.

A historic night indeed. Westbrook became just the third player in NBA history to score more than 25 points, grab at least 10 rebounds and dish out at least 20 assists in a game. He joins elite company, standing tall next to two Hall of Fame point guards in “showtime” Lakers’ Magic Johnson, who did it twice, and Pistons legend Isiah Thomas. He recorded his historic triple-double in just 34 minutes, markedly faster than Magic, who needed 42 minutes, and Thomas, who needed 50 minutes.

Other players to record triple-doubles with 20 assists include Rajon Rondo, who did it four times, Jamaal Tinsley, Rod Strickland and Fat Lever.

Westbrook’s 22 assists set a new career high and a new Oklahoma City franchise record. He came off of a screen for his final assist, when he hit rookie point guard Tyler Ulis with a vicious Shammgod move before finding Steven Adams with a no-look assist.

Westbrook’s explanation for the uncharacteristic crossover move? Sometimes, he “likes to try stuff.”
