Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Sam Jones and Paul Pierce have etched themselves into the Celtics history books not just for their sustained excellence over years of play, but as the only players with 50-point games in franchise history.

Enter Isaiah Thomas.

Thomas absolutely blasted the Miami Heat on Friday, torching his opponents for 52 points on an efficient 15-of-26 shooting, including a 29-point fourth quarter. He poured in nine three-pointers (9-of-13 shooting) and drilled all 13 of his free throw attempts.

It was the eighth 50-point game in Boston Celtics history, and his fourth quarter outburst was two points shy of the NBA record (31) set by Wilt Chamberlain in his 100-point game.

Thomas still has a lot of work to do to claw deeper into the C’s history books. Larry Legend recorded four 50-point games in green and white. Thomas is just scratching the surface.

But the Celtics needed all 52 of his points to power them to a 117-114 win over Miami on Friday. Boston is now 20-14 and a half game ahead of the Charlotte Hornets for the third seed in the Eastern Conference.
