No. 13 Hawai'i scored one of the most inspiring triumphs of the NCAA Tournament's first round on Friday. Now, to continue their run into the heart of March Madness, the Rainbow Warriors will have to fell No. 5 Maryland.

The Rainbow Warriors aim for a second big upset.
The Terrapins weren't expected to be all the way down here on the No. 5 seed line at the outset of the 2015-16 season, not with touted freshman Diamond Stone joining super sophomore Melo Trimble and a loaded starting five. But scuffle the Terps did in Big Ten play, especially at season's end, and a 1-4 record against Michigan State, Indiana and Purdue doomed them to the dangerous ground of a No. 5 vs. No. 12 matchup.
Fortunately for Maryland, that didn’t prove too troublesome on Friday, as the Terps held on despite a furious No. 12 South Dakota State rally for a 79-74 victory, thanks largely to Jake Layman’s 27 points.
Hawai’i, meanwhile, was upsetting another talented if underachieving team: No. 4 California came into the season as loaded as any team in the Pac-12, but ended it looking up at the Rainbow Warriors, who dominated the second half of their 77-66 defeat of the Golden Bears. Hawai’i’s strength stems from its balance and getting at least eight points from five different scorers helped.
Whichever team gets past the other will face the NCAA Tournament’s tallest test in the Sweet Sixteen, where No. 1 overall seed Kansas awaits.
