2016 Olympic hopeful Nick Symmonds is selling ad space on his shoulder

The winner of Symmonds’ ebay auction will get win the space for Symmonds’ 2016 season, including the Olympics if he qualifies. The catch, however, is the ad will have to be covered with white tape during competition because of what Symmonds calls “antiquated rules.”
Due to antiquated rules, during all IAAF, USOC, and IOC governed competitions, I will be forced to tape over all forms of advertising on my body except the logos of my apparel and equipment manufacturers. Though these absurd rules certainly diminish an investment in an athlete, please know that I will put in extra effort to ensure that the winner of this auction realizes a fantastic return on investment.
This is the second time Symmonds’ has auctioned off ad space on his skin. He sold a similar ad to the marketing agency Hanson Dodge Creative for $11,100 in 2012. Symmonds is an accomplished runner, having made the Olympics twice. He’s also the defending U.S. champion in the 800-meter. He didn’t run in the Wold Championships, however, in protest over contracts forcing athletes to wear Nike gear at all team functions. Symmonds is sponsored by Brooks.
Symmonds co-owns a company called Run Gum, which is currently suing the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field after the two organizations agreed to rules that restrict athletes from wearing any sponsorship other than official USATF sponsors. Symmonds is going to wear a covered Run Gum tattoo on his left shoulder during competition this year.
Currently, 73 people have placed a bid for the ad, with the auction currently up to $6,100.
