Dave Roberts was absolutely right to pull Ross Stripling

Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball is here to defend Dave Roberts for pulling Ross Stripling with a no-hitter on the line. Plus, Rajai Davis made a crazy catch in the snow, and Trevor Story is still on fire.

★★★

On Friday night, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling made his major league debut, and it was an auspicious outing for the 26-year-old righty, to say the least. Stripling pitched 7⅓ innings, struck out four, walked four, and was charged with one earned run, which came after Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pulled him from the game following his 100th pitch of the night. The big controversy here is that Stripling left the game with a no-hitter still intact.

Chris Hatcher entered the game, and in a cruel twist of fate, the no-hitter went by the wayside when San Francisco’s catcher Trevor Brown slugged a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. The Giants eventually won the game in extra innings, 3-2. Naturally, the reaction to this move ran the gamut from from shock and disappointment on one end and schadenfreude on the other end. One thing is clear, though -- Dave Roberts made the right decision.

Ross Stripling is coming off of Tommy John surgery in 2014, and stretching out a pitcher like that at this stage of the season (especially a rookie pitcher) wouldn’t be the wisest thing to do -- especially when Stripling was showing clear signs of fatigue. The allure of a historic moment in baseball history is tempting, but this is a marathon instead of a sprint, and the Dodgers had to keep Stripling’s health and durability in mind here.

Stripling’s parents agreed.

The Dodgers may have lost the game, but they’ll benefit in the long run from this decision. Meanwhile, Bumpus Jones can rest easy knowing that his achievement in 1892 still stands alone.
