In the race, Nyquist will put a perfect 8-for-8 record on the line as he tries to pick up the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Nyquist has a handful of impressive victories on his resume already, from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as a 2-year-old last October, to the Florida Derby in April, to the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago at Churchill Downs. Trained by Doug O’Neill and ridden by jockey Mario Gutierrez, Nyquist has beaten every competitor thrown at him in every condition. He’ll opened at 3-5 morning line odds .
The only two colts given any chance of beating him are Exaggerator, whose late charge at the Derby came up a little short. A product of trainer Keith Desormeaux and his brother, jockey Kent, Exaggerator has 3-1 odds as the day begins. Although he has lost more than once to Nyquist, Exaggerator’s strength in muddy conditions, which Pimlico will undoubtedly be, gives some hope of pulling off the upset.
Finally, Stradivari, at 8-1 odds, could serve as the real upset threat. He has only three starts to his name, but two of them resulted in fast times and victories of greater than 10 lengths. The problem? None of the races were stakes races, so it’s hard to say just what to expect of trainer Todd Pletcher’s charge.
NBCSN will begin its coverage for the day at 2:30 p.m., while NBC will take over once the hockey game is finished. The best way to watch it all is streaming using NBC Sports Live Extra.
