On Thursday, the NFL tweeted a link to an innocuous discussion of whether Marshawn Lynch deserves to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Smash Mouth is yelling at the NFL about Marshawn Lynch
"Lynch's career is worthy of serious @ProFootballHOF consideration." https://t.co/nBkrYd2xzA pic.twitter.com/xFYaQa2OuA

This NFL tweet is not controversial or newsworthy. This reply, however, is:
@NFL @ProFootballHOF Hell F-in Nooooooo!!!!!
— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) May 6, 2016
This is odd for two reasons:
(1) Why is Smash Mouth, the band, using its Twitter account to berate professional sports leagues?
(2) Why do they hate Marshawn Lynch so much?
The answer to question No. 1 is unclear. Perhaps, like all brands, Smash Mouth feels the misguided need to insert itself into current events in an attempt to remain culturally relevant. Or maybe, like a lot of people, they just like using the Internet to spout personal opinions without thinking about it too much.
The reason Smash Mouth is so anti-Marshawn Lynch appears to be less of a mystery: Smash Mouth is from San Jose, Calif. -- and they’re huge 49ers fans.
