Welcome to Kentucky Oaks Day! The Friday before the Kentucky Derby is the day Churchill Downs goes pink. The track is decorated in pink bunting, fans are asked to wear pink, and money is raised to help fight against breast and ovarian cancers. A slate of 12 races, many prominently featuring fillies, runs from 10:30 a.m. until nearly 6:30 p.m, culminating with the Kentucky Oaks at 5:49 p.m.

The Kentucky Oaks at 5:49 p.m. Friday may be the feature, but a full day of racing, including six stakes races in total, will keep horse racing fans excited.

Results of interest
Grade I La Troienne
The favorite entering the $300,000 La Troienne, a mile-and-a-sixteenth Grade I stakes race, Curalina, showed why. She ran away down the final stretch to beat Brooklynsway by five lengths in a time of 1:42.45. Sheer Drama finished third. Curalina was trained by John Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez. A $2 bet on Curalina returned $6.60.
Grade II Eight Belles
The 3-5 favorite, Carina Mia sat back for most of the $200,000, seven-furlong race, making her run around the final turn and then running away from the pack with conviction to win by three furlongs. Blip N’ The Bye finished second and Nickname third. Carina Mia’s time was 1:21.74. A bet to win on Carina Mia paid $3.20.
Grade III Turf Sprint
Rocket Heat picked up a bit upset victory in the Turf Sprint, leading the five furlong race from start to finish to win in 56.47 seconds. A $2 bet to win paid $19.60. Alsvid finished about three lengths back in second with Power Alert third.
Grade II Alysheba
The $400,000 Alysheba was majestic. Majestic Harbor paid off big at $28.80 on a $2 bet, while Eagle and Majestic Affair followed in second and third.
Grade III Edgewood
Catch A Glimpse paid $5 for a win in the $150,000, Grade III Edgewood Stakes, with Auntie Joy a surprise second-place finish paying $19.60 to place and Harmonize $4.40 to show.
2016 Kentucky Oaks
Cathryn Sophia won the $1 million Kentucky Oaks on Friday at Churchill Downs after making a late surge around the final turn and running away with the race down the stretch. Land Over Sea finished 2-3/4 lengths back, while Lewis Bay and Go Maggio Go with were three back. Favorite Rachel’s Valentina and Weep No More finished in sixth and seventh. Cathryn Sophia held back for most of the race, but started to move around the turn, took the lead down the stretch and added distance to her lead as she went. With the win, Cathryn Sophia is now 5-for-6 in her career, losing only the Ashland Stakes. Carthryn Sophia, trained by John Servis, paid $11.40 for the win.
