Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was suspended nine games for throwing at and fighting with Orioles shortstop Manny Machado on Tuesday night, MLB announced on Thursday. Machado was also suspended four games for charging the mound and fighting.
Yordano Ventura suspended 9 games, Manny Machado gets 4 games for brawl
Machado will still start against the Blue Jays as he’s appealing.
Both players were fined, and both are appealing the suspensions. Machado's fine was $2,500, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Machado was hit by a 99 mph fastball thrown by Ventura on Tuesday in the bottom of the fifth with one out. He didn’t take well to being thrown at and hit, and immediately went after Ventura, throwing his batting helmet aside on the way to the mound.
The benches cleared and the bullpens emptied, sparking a massive brawl on the field. Machado and others were ejected from the game.
Afterwards, Machado's teammate Adam Jones spoke out about Ventura's actions, who has a history of throwing at, hitting, and fighting people mid-game.
“I’m glad for Manny for defending himself,” Adam Jones told ESPN’s Eddie Matz, adding he’d pay for Machado’s fine if he were to be docked. “Screw it. Defend yourself. If somebody’s trying to hurt you maliciously, you go out there and you defend yourself.”
