Home Run Derby 2016 results: Giancarlo Stanton crushes the competition

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit 20 home runs in the final round to take the championship, defeating defending champion Todd Frazier, who hit 13.

Giancarlo Stanton made a statement in the championship round of the 2016 All-Star Baseball Home Run Derby Monday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

That statement was loud and clear -- there is not a better home run hitter than he is in Major League Baseball right now.

Stanton, who plays for the Miami Marlins, cranked out 20 home runs in the final round to earn the championship. He was not selected to the National League All-Star team, but he was invited to the 2016 Home Run Derby nonetheless.

He had little issue sending the ball deep, hitting two of his record-setting 61 total home runs out of the park and sending them 497 feet. Out of the 21 longest home runs in the history of the derby, Stanton now owns 20.

Here’s a good example of just how at ease he seemed while smacking home runs:

His 61 home runs is impressive in more ways than one. According to MLB.com writer Michael Clair, Yoenis Cespedes hit 62 in his two combined derby victories.

Todd Frazier, of the White Sox, made his way to the championship round with hopes of defending his 2015 Home Run Derby title. He just didn’t have the swing in the final round and came up short, hitting 13. He had a nice little run halfway through regulation, but he clearly tired out.

SECOND ROUND RESULTS

Stanton came out swinging in the second round, cranking out 17 home runs in regulation time, but he wasn’t able to add to it in the 30-second bonus round. Baltimore Oriole Mark Trumbo looked like he was planning on outpacing Stanton’s performance, but despite the hot start he slowed as the clock ticked down and couldn’t find the distance he needed as he finished with just 14, including two in the bonus time.

Defending home run derby champion Todd Frazier sent Cincinnati Reds slugger Adam Duvall home as he knocked 16 home runs out of the park with 30 seconds left in regulation. Duvall had picked up 15, but it just wasn’t enough to keep Frazier from advancing to the finals.

FIRST ROUND RESULTS

In the first round, Dodger Corey Seager cranked out 15 home runs, including three in bonus time, but he just didn’t have enough in the tank to top Trumbo, who smacked 16 home runs to win the head-to-head matchup with no need to use his earned bonus time to advance to the second round.

Stanton cranked out 24 total home runs in his opening round, tying for the second most in a round in the history of the derby, and earned a trip to the second round. His performance greatly outpaced Mariners slugger Robinson Cano, who was able to knock out only seven dingers.

Hometown favorite Wil Myers, who plays for the Padres, managed just 10 home runs in the first round, which wasn’t enough to advance as Duvall hit 11 and still had 90 seconds left on the clock.

Frazier didn’t need his bonus time to advance to the second round, hitting 13 to top the Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez’s 12 to move to the next round in defense of his 2015 derby crown.
