The National League will try to snap a three-game losing streak to the American League and in doing so will likely rely on its bevy of Chicago Cubs on the roster for the 87th MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Petco Park in San Diego.
MLB All-Star Game 2016: Time, TV schedule, lineups and more
The American League has won the last three All-Star Games and 15 of the last 20.
Fox will televise the Midsummer Classic, with Joe Buck and John Smoltz on the call. They will be joined by Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci reporting from the dugouts, with online streaming available on Fox Sports Go.
The NL has just three wins in the last 19 All-Star Games, dating back to 1997, with all three wins coming consecutively from 2010-2012. But the AL has rebounded with three wins in the last three seasons, including a 6-3 win in 2015 at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
Angels outfielder Mike Trout has captured All-Star Game MVP honors in each of the last two years, the only player ever to win consecutive awards. Trout is one of just five players to win All-Star Game MVP twice, along with Willie Mays, Steve Garvey, Gary Carter and Cal Ripken Jr.
No player has ever won three All-Star MVP awards, but Trout will get a chance on Tuesday. He’s starting for the AL for a fourth straight year while making his fifth All-Star appearance in five full major league seasons.
The winner of the All-Star Game secures home field advantage for its league in the World Series, a rule that has been in place since 2003. The change was in response to the public outcry over the tied All-Star Game in 2002 in Milwaukee, when both teams ran out of pitchers to use in 11 innings.
The team with home field advantage has won nine of the last 13 World Series under this system.
But in a weird twist, the home league in the All-Star Game does not have home field advantage on Tuesday. Because 2016 is the second of four straight seasons with the All-Star Game in a National League park, MLB has alternated this year such that the AL will bat last in Petco Park, home of the Padres.
Despite the recent domination of the All-Star Game by the American League, the National League still holds a narrow advantage overall, with a record of 43-41-2.
This is the third MLB All-Star Game in San Diego. The first two were played in what is currently Qualcomm Stadium, under the name San Diego Stadium in 1978 and Jack Murphy Stadium in 1992.
Lineups
The entire starting infield for the National League, as voted by fans, is comprised of Cubs, with Anthony Rizzo at first base, Ben Zobrist at second base, Addison Russell at shortstop and Kris Bryant at third base.
Chicago had a fifth player voted into the starting lineup (outfielder Dexter Fowler), but with Fowler and Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes injured, that cleared the way for Marcell Ozuna of the Marlins and Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez to start in the NL outfield.

The legendary Ortiz, having one of the finest age-40 seasons in major league history in his final year, starts at designated hitter for the American League, one of four Red Sox players in the AL lineup, along with Bogaerts, Betts, and Bradley Jr.
On Monday, Chicago’s Sale and Giants’ Cueto were named starting pitchers for the AL and NL, respectively.
Royals manager Ned Yost is managing the AL team for a second straight season, the first to do so since Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers in 2011-2012. Mets skipper Terry Collins manages the NL, his first All-Star Game as manager.
