Morning Skate: The praise for Jamie Benn’s new contract is well-deserved

And more P.K. Subban trade fallout! It’s like a summer soap opera.

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED ...

... to learn that the P.K. Subban trade doesn't even rank in the top five worst trades in Canadiens history. Habs Eyes on the Prize took a look back and determined that guys like Mark Recchi, Scott Gomez and Chris Chelios made them tear their hair out even more.

Of course, if you want to troll them you could head over to their post about the best trades in Canadiens history and vote Subban as a write-in candidate. I certainly don’t encourage that, though. Nope. I wash my hands of this.

Speaking of, it appears that Montreal fired their analytics guy after he argued against the Subban trade. Things are fine there, though. All fine.

BENN BEST

Dallas pundits are lauding Jamie Benn's new deal as one of the best in DFW sports. It's hard to argue against that, but it's only excellent in context. If John Klingberg hadn't been locked up for pennies (seriously, seven years for $4.25 million per year is a steal) then the Stars might've had to play harder with Benn in negotiations.

As it is, they now have room to give Tyler Seguin a similar raise in three years when Ales Hemsky, Patrick Sharp and the albatross contracts of Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi come off the books. Both the Stars and Lightning (with the Stamkos and Hedman contracts) have done well in that sense this summer.

In the meantime, Benn will be the fifth-highest paid player on the Stars next year. What a world.
