MLB threatened Yasiel Puig with a fine because he wore Vin Scully cleats and they hate fun

Also, there are Vin Scully cleats.

Look at these danged Vin Scully cleats:

The Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster is retiring after 67 years, so Yasiel Puig did the only logical thing he could think of: wear Vin Scully cleats. It was so fun that MLB.com decided to post the above clip on their website. You know, to entertain baseball fans.

That’s when Major League Baseball said enough of that entertainment malarkey, young man. And it’s a good thing they did, too. From Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register:

Puig received a letter from Major League Baseball warning him that he would be subject to a $5,000 fine if he wore them again.

The letter from Joe Garagiola Jr., MLB’s senior vice president of standards and on-field operations, advised Puig that the cleats did not conform to MLB’s uniform rules.

The hashtag stands for Scully’s catchphrase, “It’s time for Dodgers baseball,” so there’s no nefarious Nike advertising ploy, here. Just a man and his Vin Scully cleats.

In response, I would like to announce that SB Nation is officially threatening to fine Major League Baseball $5,000 for every day in which an active baseball player is not wearing Vin Scully cleats. The money will go to charity, for the most part, at least some of it, probably, but the fine is real and probably totally enforceable.

Your choice, MLB. Letting Puig wear the Scully cleats is probably your best option, to be honest.
