Needing a backup center, the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to a three-year, $22 million contract with former Clipper Cole Aldrich, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Aldrich should slot in behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Gorgui Dieng in the frontcourt.

Aldrich had a nice year coming off Doc Rivers’ bench in Los Angeles. Out of the rotation to start the year, Aldrich’s consistent play, particularly on defense, slowly earned him more minutes. He ultimately averaged five points and five rebounds in just under 14 minutes per game as DeAndre Jordan’s backup. However, the Clippers were nearly a point and a half better defensively with Aldrich in the game, per NBA.com’s stats page.
He’ll now fill a similar role for Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota. Thibodeau has a track record of improving big men, having developed Omer Asik into a starter-quality player in Chicago. The Timberwolves are hoping he can do the same to Aldrich, who will turn 28 during the first week of the regular season.
