We are now perilously close to Monday’s trade deadline, and the warning shots of trade rumors are only getting closer and louder as we near the big day. One of the juicier trade rumors involved the Nationals and Yankees, and this particular deal was a one-for-one offer that seemed too good to actually be true.

According to Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, the Nationals were willing to give the Yankees top pitching prospect Lucas Giolito in exchange for Andrew Miller. That was it. That was all. Nobody else was involved. That was the entire deal: Giolito for Miller. Now, we’ve already seen evidence that this year’s trade market is clearly in favor of the sellers, but this was wild. The Yankees would be adding a legitimate top prospect in exchange for a 31-year-old journeyman pitcher. That’s an offer that you accept seven days a week and twice on Sunday, right? Well, the Yankees decided that this wasn’t good enough for them.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees did place value in Giolito but their concerns were such that they wanted more prospects in a deal in order to outweigh those concerns. When word spread that the Yankees were actually the ones who were hesitant to make this trade, some smart people in and around baseball were flabbergasted, and rightfully so. Again, this is one of the weirder trade markets in recent memory, and it is so clearly a seller’s market. It’s utterly shocking that the Yankees allegedly turned this deal down. Will they end up regretting it come the offseason? We’ll have to see.
