Larry Brown will resign as coach of the SMU Mustangs, according to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein. He came to that decision after the university refused to offer him a long-term contract.

Brown is leaving the Mustangs after four years on the job.

The 75-year-old Brown coached four seasons at SMU. His tenure with the Mustangs was defined by near-misses and NCAA sanctions. SMU was banned from the NCAA Tournament last season for an academic misconduct scandal involving former player Keith Frazier. Brown was charged with a ‘lack of coach control’ and was suspended for nine games. SMU then turned in one of the best seasons in program history, starting 18-0 on its way way to a 25-5 season.
Brown also just missed reeling in the biggest recruit in school history when now-Denver Nuggets point guard Emmanuel Mudiay opted to play in China rather than honor his commitment to SMU. Mudiay was ranked as the No. 5 recruit in the class of 2014 by ESPN and would go on to become the No. 7 pick in the 2015 NBA draft. The Mustangs would go on to make the NCAA Tournament for the only time in the ensuing season, but fell to UCLA in the round of 64 on a controversial goal-tending call.
Brown finishes his tenure at SMU 94-39, good for a winning percentage of 70.7. Assistant Tim Jankovich now takes over the program. The Mustangs lose star point guard Nic Moore to graduation as well as big men Markus Kennedy and Jordan Tolbert.
