Spanish runner learns mid-interview that he won gold, not silver

James Dator
James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.

Bruno Hortelano’s post-race interview is something the runner will never, ever forget. Just after finishing the 200M at the European Athletics Championships he spoke with a reporter in the media area and was immediately confused.

Hortelano couldn’t work out why the reporter was telling him he won gold, not silver — assuming it was a communication breakdown. Moments later they began the interview again, with the same result: more confusion being told he won gold. What Hortelano didn’t know is that the first place finisher was disqualified after the race.

The moment he realized what was happening is perfection.

This is a truly great sports moment.
