With qualification out of the way, the men’s individual all-around final in gymnastics will be decided Wednesday in Rio. Japanese gymnast Kohei Uchimura will look to defend his gold medal in the event as one of 24 gymnasts who earned a place in the final during the qualification round Saturday.

All eyes will be on Japan’s Kohei Uchimura, who is vying to become the first repeat winner in the men’s gymnastics individual all-around since 1972.
Uchimura won gold at the 2012 Olympics in London and has continued performing well internationally since then. Last year in Glasgow, he won gold in men’s individual all-around at the World Championships, so he’s in a strong position to become the first repeat winner of the competition at the Olympics since 1972.
Another Japanese gymnast, Sawao Kato, won gold in individual all-around at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Uchimura won silver at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, so this would be his third straight time earning a medal in the individual all-around.
Uchimura’s medal isn’t assured. He finished second in qualifying to Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, and fewer than 0.7 points ahead of Russia’s David Belyavskiy. Team USA qualified two gymnasts: Sam Mikulak, who finished seventh in qualifying, and Chris Brooks, who finished 19th.
Uchimuara could make history if he wins gold again in Rio, but the competition is cut out for him. NBC Sports will be streaming the action live online, so here’s how to watch:
