Bradley Wiggins and Kristin Armstrong look to defend their gold medals in Rio.

The action gets going early Wednesday with the women’s time trials set for 7:30 a.m. ET and the men’s for 10 a.m. ET. One of two Olympic road cycling competitions, time trials see each athlete race alone against the clock to cover the course in the shortest time possible. This is in contrast to the road race, which sees all the athletes racing on the course at the same time.
The course used for the time trials is located on the Pontal area with a starting point at Tim Maia Square. There are a couple notable differences between the men’s and women’s competitions:
- For the men, 40 riders participate and cover a distance of 54.5 kilometers because they do two laps on one part of the course.
- For the women, 25 riders participate and cover a distance of 29.8 kilometers because they only do one lap.
On both sides, the competition should be tough. Bradley Wiggins, the first British winner of the Tour de France and gold medalist in men’s time trials at the 2012 Olympics, will be back to defend his title. He’ll get competition once again from fellow Brit Chris Froome, who is recently coming off his third Tour de France win in four years.
And for American fans, Kristin Armstrong is going into the women’s time trials looking for her third straight Olympic gold. Armstrong is 42 years old and her inclusion helped push out Carmen Small, which caused a stir in the cycling world earlier this summer. Defending her title at that age would be an incredible feat for Armstrong.
NBC Sports will have all the action streaming live, so here’s how to follow to follow online:
