Michael Phelps’ quest for a fourth straight Olympic gold medal in the men’s 200-meter individual medley begins Wednesday in Rio. The event has long been one of Phelps’ best, and now he’ll look to cap off his incredible career by defending his title yet again.

Phelps looks for a fourth straight gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley.

The heats for the 200-meter individual medley are part of the afternoon session, which begins at noon ET, and the semifinals will be held during the night session starting at 9 p.m. ET. Assuming Phelps gets through the heats and semis, he’ll swim in the finals Thursday night.
For Phelps, anything less than a gold medal would be a disappointment. This is a race that he hasn’t simply won, but dominated over the past decade-plus. Starting with a gold medal in the event at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships, Phelps has regularly owned this race.
He won gold medals at Olympics in 2004, 2008 and 2012, and at the World Championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007. He’s also won silver medals at the 2011 World Championships and, following his return from retirement, at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.
So this Phelps guy is pretty dang good, and here’s one of the last chances to see him on a big stage in one of his best events. While the finals await on Thursday, here’s how to watch Phelps compete to qualify on Wednesday:
