Sam Dorman and Michael Hixon stayed cool under pressure and took home the silver as a result.

Great Britain won the gold, and China finished with the bronze. Immediately preceding the Dorman and HIxon’s medal-clinching dive was a bizarre scene involving a light going on while the Mexican pair were preparing for their dive. There was confusion as to whether they would be allowed to re-do their dive, which they ultimately did not do. While all this was going on, Dorman and Hixon were forced to wait and think, sitting in third place with only one dive left.
The silver medal is the US team’s best finish in the event, which began being contested in the Olympics in 2000. Dorman and Hixon’s lofty finish caps off a whirlwind story for the pair, who only began competing together at the Olympic trials in June. It’s also the United States’ second men’s synchronized diving medal of these Olympics, along with David Boudia and Steele Johnson’s silver in the 10-meter platform event.
