Michael Phelps will go for the Olympic gold four-peat in the men’s 100-meter butterfly Friday night in Rio. The winner of this event in the past three Olympics, Phelps already passed through the qualification round and semifinals without trouble. Now comes the opportunity to add to his legend by winning another gold 12 years after his first.
Rio 2016 swimming live stream: How to watch Michael Phelps compete in the 100m butterfly final
Phelps is looking for his fourth gold medal in the 100m butterfly.
The final for the men’s 100-meter butterfly is part of the swimming night session beginning at 9 p.m. ET. NBC Sports will have live coverage of the whole thing, so you’ll be able to watch as Phelps tries to swim toward history. Or, well, more history considering he’s already the most decorated Olympian ever.
Phelps is the world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, having set the mark of 49.82 seconds at the 2009 World Championships. That incredible feat came a year after Phelps set the Olympic record by swimming it in 50.58 seconds. At the 2012 Olympics, Phelps’ time of 51.21 seconds was good enough for gold yet again.
Even if Phelps hasn’t been able to top that incredible 2009 performance, he’s still consistently proven to be the man to beat in this race. At the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships following his return from retirement, Phelps won gold with a time of 51.29 seconds, then he topped that by winning the 2016 U.S. trials with a time of 51.00 seconds.
So Phelps has a long track record of success in this event, and now he’s preparing to line up in an Olympic final on Friday night. If this is indeed Phelps’ last Olympics, then you’ll surely want to watch the swimming legend dive in for one of his final performances.
