It’s time for some track and field at the 2016 Olympics. Day 1 won’t feature big names like Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin, but there are still some medals on the line early. Starting with the women’s 10,000-meter long run in the morning, Friday is full of action in Rio and NBC Sports will be streaming it all live.

Shot put and the heptathlon are among the events kicking off track and field competition in Rio.
A pair of two-time defending Olympic gold medalists, long runner Tirunesh Dibaba and shot putter Valerie Adams, will be looking to retain their titles. Dibaba is competing in the 10,000-meter long run, which she’s won in the past two Olympics, while Adams will go for a third straight gold in the shot putting final during the evening session.
The other medal events for the day are the women’s heptathlon, which will conclude Saturday, and the men’s 20-kilometer walking race. The heptathlon consists of seven events -- 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin throw, 800 meters -- and covers two days. British athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill will look to defend her title in the heptathlon.
It’s not quite the star-studded affair that the men’s 100-meter sprint will be when Bolt and Gatlin take center stage, but the first day of track and field in Rio is still full of interesting action. Here’s the full schedule and NBC Sports’ live stream for coverage on Friday.
All times Eastern and medal events are in bold. All events broadcast on NBC and NBCSN.
