Diving is an incredibly precise sport. Every moment has a thought behind it. The run up, the jump, the action in the air. It’s all calculated to enter the water with barely a ripple. Then sometimes it just all goes terribly wrong.
Russian diver receives a zero after back flopping on attempt

It all went wrong for Russian diver Nadezhda Bazhina on this attempt. Things got off to a shaky start while she was still on the board. Instead of springing from the middle of the board on her jump, she almost slipped off the side of the board. That threw the entire motion off and she just wasn’t able to recover.
Issues in diving are extremely magnified. A significant splash on a normal attempt can be considered a disaster. A back flop in the Olympics? That is rare territory.
The mistake was especially costly for Bazhina. She dove well on her other five attempts, but missed out on making the semifinals with the 0.00 dive on her scorecard. Even a modest score would have easily secured her a spot in the next round.
