The Americans added more gold to extend their lead in the medal table.
The Americans dominated in the pool once again behind another world record from Katie Ledecky, who swam 8:04.79 in the 800m freestyle. That broke her own world record by nearly two seconds, and was good enough to win the gold medal by a shocking 11 seconds. Madeline Dirado won the women’s 200-meter backstroke in shocking fashion, passing favorite Katinka Hosszú from Hungary in the race’s final instant to win gold by 0.06 seconds. Anthony Ervin, 35, became the oldest American swimmer to ever win gold, taking the men’s 50m freestyle by 0.01 seconds. Michael Phelps came up just short of his 23rd gold medal, but tied with two other swimmers to win silver in the 100m butterfly.
Michelle Carter added another gold medal for the US in the shot put, becoming the first American woman to win the event. She threw 20.63 on her final throw of the night to pass Valerie Adams of New Zealand to win gold. Adams is the sister of Oklahama City Thunder star Steven Adams.
