Michael Phelps isn’t used to sharing the spotlight -- he’s usually the one winning gold medals. But after finishing in a three-way tie with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s László Cseh behind Singapore’s Joseph Schooling in the men’s 100m butterfly, Phelps had to let others in on the glory, too. In fact, all three silver medalists had to share the podium at the medal ceremony.
Rivals Michael Phelps, Chad le Clos celebrate their 3-way tie for silver on a crowded podium
The 100m butterfly medal ceremony featured two odd sights: three silver medalists, one of them being Michael Phelps.

Phelps and le Clos ended up sharing a medal after Phelps was staring daggers at his rival before the 200m butterfly. The South African had beaten Phelps in the race in London, but the American went on to put on a clinic in Rio as he raced to his 21st gold medal.
Phelps went on to win another gold on Thursday in the 200m individual medley, but came up just short in the 100m butterfly on Friday. It was his first race in Rio that he didn’t win. Still, a silver medal isn’t too bad -- even if you have to share the podium with some your rivals.
