Two of the biggest stars in Rio will take center stage at the 2016 Olympics on Saturday. In the morning, Usain Bolt will make his debut in the preliminary and opening rounds of the men’s 100-meter sprint, then later on, Michael Phelps will dive into the pool for what’s likely his final Olympic swim.
Rio 2016 schedule: Time and TV schedule for Saturday’s events
It’s the final day for Michael Phelps in Rio as he swims in the men’s 4x100-meter medley relay final.
It’ll be a great day for sports fans, and NBC Sports will make sure that you can tune into it all. There will be live streaming of the action all day long, and select events will be broadcast on television, too.
Bolt and Phelps have been two of the biggest names in international sports over the past decade. Whether it was the 2008 Olympics in Beijing or the 2012 Olympics in London, these two dominated the competition and the headlines. In Rio, they’ll both look to do the same.
The headlines shouldn’t be too much trouble considering they’re already stars, but what happens in Rio will be the real intrigue. Bolt is the world record holder in the 100-meter sprint and enters the event as the favorite. He’ll have to race against American sprinter Justin Gatlin, who won gold in this event at the 2004 Olympics in Athens before Bolt’s rise to prominence. After missing out on the 2008 Olympics because of a doping suspension, Gatlin earned the bronze medal in 2012.
The rest of the day is full of good stuff to watch. In tennis, there will be a gold medal match in women’s singles and lots of other bronze medal matches. In gymnastics, the men’s trampoline final is always entertaining. There’s also soccer, basketball, cycling and more.
During the evening, the focus will turn to swimming and Phelps in particular. He’s the most decorated Olympian in history, and since making his debut at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he’s been a fixture for American swimming. On Saturday night, Phelps is swimming in the Olympics for what’s likely the final time. He’s not expected to participate in 2020, so this is your last chance to see the greatest swimmer ever on the biggest stage possible.
There will be several finals during the swimming night session, including the men’s 4x100-meter medley relay. That’s the race Phelps will be competing in along with three other swimmers. Additionally, the women’s 50-meter freestyle, women’s 4x100-meter medley relay and men’s 1,500-meter freestyle are among the finals set for the night.
All times Eastern.
