Team USA’s three-time Olympic gold streak came to an end Friday after being bounced out of the group stage.
“Cowardly” Sweden sends Hope Solo and the USWNT packing
With all that salt, maybe Solo should think about pursuing deep sea fishing.
The U.S. was absolutely stunned by Sweden in a 4-3 penalty kick shootout loss. To no surprise, the underdog Swedes came into Friday with a defensive tactical approach against the defending World Cup champion Americans. Also perhaps to no surprise, goalkeeper Hope Solo had something to say about it:
“We came back from a goal down. I’m very proud of this team. And I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The better team did not win today. I strongly believe that.”
Sweden’s Coach Pia Sundhage, the former Team USA skipper who led the Americans to gold in 2008 and 2012, fired back at her former goalie.
“I don’t give a crap. I am going to Rio, she’s going home.”
The winners/“coward” Swedes will take on Brazil Tuesday in the semifinals.
