The U.S. women conclude their run through the group stage with a matchup against China on Sunday morning.

There’s still a lot on the line for this game, however, because China is playing to avoid elimination. The team is currently 1-3 in the group stage and needs a win over the U.S. to have any chance of leaping over Serbia for fourth place in Group A. Both Serbia and China have five points so far, but Serbia holds the tiebreaker because it won their head-to-head matchup Friday.
So this is a must-win game for China to have any shot at advancing, although it’s worth noting that the odds are incredibly stacked against them. Not only would China need to beat the U.S., which is highly unlikely, but Serbia would need to lose its matchup against Senegal, which has been outscored by an average of 41.5 points over its first four games. The chances of a China win and Serbia loss are quite low.
The Americans haven’t really been challenged yet in Rio. They set an Olympic record by beating Senegal by 65 points in their first game and have beat their opponents by an average of 42.5 points per game. The Chinese team crushed Senegal (by 37 points) and had a nice late rally against Serbia, but this is probably going to be its final game in Rio barring some major upsets.
