Olympic track and field 2016 schedule: Usain Bolt races for gold in 100 meters

Bolt takes on Justin Gatlin of the U.S. as he races for his third consecutive gold medal, plus the women race the for marathon glory on Sunday.

James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

Usain Bolt can only add to his legacy. The two-time defending Olympic champ is looking for gold medal No. 3 in the 100 meters on Sunday night, and he’ll need to beat the U.S.‘s Justin Gatlin to add even more history to his already otherworldly resume.

Prior to that, the women will race for glory in the marathon. Team USA’s Amy Hastings, Desiree Linden and Shalane Flanagan (who won bronze in the women’s 10,000 meters in 2008) all have an outside shot at a medal in that event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Sunday’s track and field will be televised first at 8 a.m. ET on NBC to cover the women’s marathon, then at 7 p.m. on NBC as the track events take place. Online coverage will be available throughout the day by NBC Sports.

The focus will be on Bolt, who could become the first man or woman to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100 meters. He’s the greatest ever at the event with the world record and the two gold medals. Aside from a false start in the 2011 world championships, he hasn’t been beaten in the event since 2007.

Gatlin poses the greatest challenge to Bolt. Gatlin won gold in the 100 in 2004, but was serving a drug suspension in 2008 when Bolt burst onto the scene in Beijing. Gatlin has only beaten Bolt once, but the U.S. champion could surprise on Sunday night.

The men’s 400 meters should be just as exciting as the men’s 100. In last year’s world championships Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, Kirani James of Grenada and LaShawn Merritt of the U.S. became the first three runners to break 44 seconds in the same race. They’ve all looked great in the preliminary rounds and should be ready to put on a show on Sunday night.

The women’s triple jump final also takes place Sunday. The events will be streaming live, but here’s how you can watch them all:

All times Eastern and medal events are in bold. All events broadcast on NBC and NBCSN.
