The 2016 Rio Olympics continue for their ninth day of competition on Sunday. The day’s early sessions saw plenty of medals awarded in sports including golf, tennis, gymnastics and diving, and there will be more hardware to hand out in the evening.
2016 Olympics live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch NBC’s prime time coverage online
NBC will have full coverage of all events, between their family of TV networks and the live streams available online at NBC Olympics.
The highlight of the prime time coverage will be track and field, where medals will be awarded in the women’s triple jump and the men’s 100m and 400m sprints. That means Usain Bolt will be in action in the 100m, looking to become the first athlete to win the event in three straight Olympics.
In contrast to that singular dominance, the 400m will feature two past gold medal winners. LaShawn Merritt of the United States won in 2008, but a hamstring injury kept him out of the 2012 Games and in his absence Kirani Jones of Grenada took home the top prize. They put up the top two times in the semifinals leading into this race.
Meanwhile, the United States barely squeaked into the finals of the women’s triple jump, with Keturah Orji finishing 12th in a qualifying session that saw 12 athletes move on. The 20-year-old is a first-time Olympian.
In other action on Sunday evening, there will be two games in the men’s basketball tournament: Australia vs. Venezuela, and Serbia vs. China. Those games will have major implications for Group A, as Venezuela and Serbia are tied for the group’s fourth and final advancement spot with 1-3 records. If one wins on Sunday while the other loses, then the winner will move on to the quarterfinals; if both win or both lose, then Serbia is virtually guaranteed to secure the tiebreaker thanks to their superior point differential (their advantage stands at an enormous 109 points entering the day). Serbia also has the more favorable matchup, as they’ll face a winless China while Venezuela has to play against an Aussie group that is arguably the second-best team in the tournament.
Finally, the evening will wrap up with some beach volleyball. The women’s tournament has reached the quarterfinals, and the last match of the day will feature the superstar American duo of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross. They will face Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy of Australia. Walsh Jennings and Ross have dropped only one set while winning their first four matches in Rio.
