It took Allyson Felix three tries to get her first Olympic gold medal in the 200 meters, but she’s on pace to win the 400 meters in her first try. She’ll race a talented field in the 400 meters at 9:45 p.m. ET on Monday night in Rio going for her second individual gold medal and fifth gold medal overall. She’s won two silver medals, too.
Olympics 2016, track and field schedule: Allyson Felix races for gold in 400 meters
Felix races towards history and David Rudisha of Kenya goes for a second straight gold in the 800 meters on Monday in Rio.
Felix was expected to be racing for double gold in the 200 and 400, just like Michael Johnson 20 years ago, but an ankle injury derailed her chances of that. She just missed qualifying for the 200 meters. Now she’s fighting for redemption and gold in the 400 would be the perfect remedy.
In other track action, the best 800-meter runner in history will be tested once again. David Rudisha, the Kenyan world-record holder, will face a challenge in the two-lap race. He raced to a world record of 1:40.91 in the 800 in London, and, despite a slew of injuries in the four years since, he’s the favorite to win gold again. Americans Clayton Murphy and Boris Berian have a chance at medaling.
Emma Coburn could bring home the first U.S. medal in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, the event with the water jump, on Monday morning. Other finals include the men’s pole vault and the women’s hammer throw. The events will be streaming live -- here’s how you can watch them all:
