Kenya’s David Rudisha is the best 800-meter runner in the world, and there’s no doubt about it. He led from the gun and raced to a 1:42.15 in the two-lap race to win his second consecutive gold medal. He became the first man since New Zealand’s Peter Snell to defend his title in the 800.
Olympics 2016: David Rudisha defends his title to win gold in men’s 800m run
Rudisha won as expected as Clayton Murphy gave the Americans their first medal since 1992.

Rudisha set the world record at the London Games, running from the front to run 1:40.91 in astonishing fashion. Rudisha didn’t quite set another world record, but he ran dominantly once again, showing just how amazing he is.
Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria took second to win the silver medal in 1:42.61 and American Clayton Murphy finished in the bronze medal position with a time of 1:42.93, the third fastest time in U.S. history.
Alfred Kipketer of Kenya took the race out at a blistering pace, coming through the first lap in 49.23 seconds, but then Rudisha moved to the front on the backstretch and came through the 600 meters in 1:16.04 and he never looked back.
Rudisha has been the dominant 800-meter runner on the global stage since that 2012 win. Simply put, he’s the greatest 800 runner of all time.
