Olympic track and field 2016 schedule: Devon Allen races for gold in 110-meter hurdles, women run for glory in 1500 meters

The Oregon football star will have his hands full in the hurdles, plus the women’s 1500-meter final goes off and Usain Bolt begins his quest for his eighth gold with the first round of the 200 meters.

Devon Allen is ready for the big time. The Oregon football star won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 110-meter hurdles, and now he’s racing for glory in Rio. Allen headlines a big night of action on the track that includes the final in the women’s 1500-meter run.

Allen will face a tough challenge from world leader Omar McLeod of Jamaica, who has run 12.98 seconds this year, and Orlando Ortega of Spain, who has run 13.04 -- Allen ran 13.03 to win the U.S. championship. Aries Merritt and Jason Richardson of the USA swept the top two spots in London, but neither qualified for Rio.

Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia is the heavy favorite in the women’s 1500 meters. She broke a longstanding world record in the event last summer, blazing a 3:50.07 (that equates to about a 4:09 mile). Dibaba’s coach, Jama Aden, is embroiled in a doping controversy -- he was allegedly found in a hotel in Spain with EPO -- but she’ll be racing on Tuesday night. Americans Shannon Rowbury and Jenny Simpson both have an outside shot at finishing in the top three to bring home a U.S. medal.

Usain Bolt races the first round of the 200 meters during the morning session, plus there are finals in the men’s triple jump and women’s discus throw.
