Olympics 2016: Jamaica’s Omar McLeod wins gold in men’s 110m hurdles

McLeod gave Jamaica its first-ever gold medal in the event as Devon Allen of the U.S. finished fifth.

With daylight between him and the rest of the field, Jamaica’s Omar McLeod won Olympic gold in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 13.05 seconds. With a flurry of fallen hurdles behind him -- none of which were McLeod’s -- he became the first Jamaican to win the 110-meter hurdles, and he did so in dominant fashion.

Orlando Ortego of Spain won silver in 13.17 seconds and Dimitri Bascou of France won bronze in 13.24 seconds. France's Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, with strips of tape running up and down his arms and legs, finished fourth.

Devon Allen, the Oregon football player turned hurdler, finished fifth with a time of 13.31 seconds. Fellow American Ronnie Ash stumbled over the final hurdle and finished last in 13.45 seconds. Team USA was shut out of the medals for the first time in Olympic history.

McLeod was the favorite heading in with a world leading time of 12.98. Allen had won the U.S. Olympic Trials in 13.03 and Ortega had a 13.04 clocking to his name.

Russian Sergey Shubenkov won the 2015 world championship, but Russia was banned from the 2016 Olympics due to doping violations.

Allen struggled through the first two rounds in Rio, barely qualifying for the final.

Aries Merritt and Jason Richardson led a 1-2 sweep for Team USA in 2012, but neither qualified for the Olympics in 2016.
