Three Olympic gold medals will get handed out in women’s freestyle wrestling on Thursday in Rio. It’s the second and final day of competition on the women’s side, with the 53kg, 63kg and 75kg weight classes wrestling for gold. Wrestling at the Olympics concludes with men’s freestyle at the end of the week.

Helen Maroulis and Adeline Gray are among the Americans wrestling for gold in Rio on Thursday.

Women’s freestyle was expanded as part of this year’s Rio Games, with six weight classes instead of the four that were used since their addition to the Olympic roster in 2004. That move was designed to bring parity between the genders, as the men and women each now compete in six different weight classes.
Americans have won four medals in women’s freestyle wrestling, including two at 63kg. Elena Pirozhkova will look to win a third starting with a Round of 16 victory in her opening match against Bulgaria’s Taybe Yusein on Thursday. In other matches involving Team USA members, Helen Maroulis will take on Ukraine’s Yuliya Khavaldzky in 53kg qualifying and Adeline Gray will wrestle Colombia’s Andrea Olaya in the 75kg Round of 16.
None of the Americans have ever won an Olympic medal before, but Maroulis and Gray are defending world champions at 55kg and 75kg, respectively. If they can repeat those efforts from the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, Team USA might be able to finally score its first Olympic gold medal in the sport. And hey, there’s a possibility we might even get more than one in the same day.
NBC Sports will be streaming all the action live, so here’s how to watch women’s freestyle wrestling Thursday.
