The U.S. women have another shot at qualifying for the Olympic final in the 4x100m relay this evening in a special time trial.

It’s been a chaotic day for the Americans, who entered the event as favorites yet nearly found themselves eliminated before the final. In the qualifying race, Allyson Felix collided with a Brazilian runner while trying to hand off the baton at the end of the second leg, leading to chaos and an ugly last-place result.
The U.S. immediately filed a protest of the results with the IAAF, the governing body that runs international track and field, because of Felix’s collision with the Brazilian runner. The IAAF accepted the appeal, which is why the Americans are getting another opportunity to run. Brazil, meanwhile, is disqualified as a result of its violation.
Felix and company need to post a time better than 42.70 seconds in their time trial in order to advance to the final. China is officially the eighth-place team in qualifying right now, so it’ll get knocked out if the U.S. beats that time. It’s an unfortunate turn of events for China, which posted an identical 42.70-second time as Canada, but falls behind them by thousandths of a second.
Here’s more on why the Americans are running on an empty track to determine Olympic final qualification. Below there is information on live streaming via NBC Sports for the time trial.
